Climate Resilience Isn’t a Feature. It’s the Design Brief

There was a time when designing a garden for the British climate seemed a relatively straightforward proposition.

You assessed the soil, considered the aspect, thought about drainage and shelter, selected appropriate plants and got on with it. The weather might vary from season to season, but the broad assumptions remained consistent.

Today, those assumptions no longer feel quite so reliable.

We are seeing prolonged dry spells followed by intense rainfall. Winters are becoming milder, summers hotter, and weather patterns less predictable. Whether one approaches this from a scientific, political or purely practical perspective, the reality is hard to ignore; gardens are being asked to perform under increasingly variable conditions.

And so perhaps the question isn’t how we design gardens despite climate change. Rather, it is how we design gardens because of it.

The End of Gardening Against Nature

 

For much of the twentieth century, garden making was often an exercise in control. We flattened ground. Straightened watercourses. Imported soil. Removed trees. Installed irrigation. We demanded that plants perform in conditions that bore little resemblance to their native habitats. Sometimes this produced beautiful results. Often it required a significant amount of ongoing intervention to keep those results looking as intended.

Increasingly, that approach feels at odds with the reality of modern landscape design. The most successful gardens we create today tend not to be those that dominate nature, but those that collaborate with it. A site that floods may be telling us something. A lawn that repeatedly struggles through summer drought may be telling us something too.

Good design starts with listening.

 

Water: Too Little and Too Much

 

One of the peculiar challenges facing British gardens is that we simultaneously seem to have too much water and not enough. After months of drought, a heavy storm arrives. Drains struggle. Water runs off hard surfaces. Borders become saturated. Then, a few weeks later, the ground is dry once again. Historically, our response has been to get rid of water as quickly as possible.

But perhaps that is the wrong question. Rather than asking how quickly water can leave a garden, we should be asking how long we can persuade it to stay. The principles behind sustainable drainage, rain gardens and permeable surfaces are not particularly revolutionary. In many ways they simply replicate what healthy natural landscapes have always done: slow water down, hold it, filter it and release it gradually.

The challenge for designers is not merely technical. It is aesthetic. Can these systems also be beautiful? The answer, happily, is yes. Some of the most memorable contemporary landscapes are those where the movement of water has become an integral part of the design narrative rather than an invisible engineering solution.

A New Palette

 

Climate resilience inevitably changes the way we think about planting. Certain species that once struggled in Britain now flourish. Others increasingly show signs of stress, particularly where soils are poor or irrigation is limited. This is neither good nor bad. It is simply change. Garden design has always evolved through changing plant palettes. The Victorian plant hunters transformed British horticulture. Modern ecological thinking has transformed it again.

What matters is resisting the temptation to see resilience as a compromise.

Drought-tolerant planting is often spoken about as though it represents a reduction in ambition, a retreat from richness. In practice, the opposite is often true. The silvers of Mediterranean shrubs, the movement of grasses, the architectural forms of euphorbias and agaves, the seasonal drama of prairie-inspired planting schemes—these create landscapes of remarkable character and beauty.

Resilient planting does not mean less gardening. It means different gardening.

 

The Value of Trees

 

If there is one climate adaptation measure that consistently delivers benefits, it is planting trees. Trees cool their surroundings. They provide habitat. They store carbon. They improve wellbeing. They soften architecture. They anchor a landscape through time. They are also an act of optimism.

One of the fascinating aspects of garden design is that it forces us to think beyond ourselves. The tree planted today reaches maturity long after the design drawings have been filed away and the project photographs have been archived.

To plant a tree is to acknowledge the future. In a world increasingly concerned with immediate results, that feels more important than ever.
