Feature Project: A Garden in Surrey

Written by Rosa Hinton

Our design team share their insight into one of their latest design projects – a contemporary garden for a new home in Surrey.

The brief from the client was to create a clean, contemporary garden which most importantly, was low maintenance. The planting was key for this aspect and we have chosen lots of grasses for this, as well as easy-care perennials for seasonal interest. The garden is made up of multiple parts and all required a bespoke design to fit the client’s needs. We refined the front garden with new planting, alongside hedges or trees to frame the approach and provide privacy. We then split the large rear garden into three distinct areas.

The top of the garden provides an extended entertainment space, with a dining area, lounge seating and an outdoor kitchen, each with their own character.

The garden then slopes down, which needed better-designed access. We answered this by creating a journey through a series of stairs and terraces, as well as winding pathways, surrounded by low maintenance yet attractive planting.

Finally, the bottom of the garden is designed to be an informal space – somewhere to escape to and get some peace and quiet. We designed seating in this area, as well as a sunken fire pit where the client could spend long summer evenings.

Various members of our team are working collaboratively on the scheme, and they all agree that it’s been a fun project to create ideas for. We’re now working through the final design stages, and we hope to see construction starting before too long.
