Each month we’ll feature a 5 question interview with one of our contracts and construction team. This month we’ve got our Operations Director, Matthew Maynard, in the hotseat…
1. What’s the best part of your job?
The point when a garden starts to come ‘out of the ground’ and the design comes to life.
2. What’s your favourite landscape?
If we’re looking at a man-made landscape – then my own garden. I enjoy tinkering every season with the planting and looking forward to / planning / improving / various elements. I always have an expensive wish list which hardly ever become reality! My favourite natural landscape has to be the Scottish Highlands. We try and get up as a family once a year in the spring to the west coast, opposite the Isle of Skye – simply breathtaking!
3. What are you working on now?
Trying to complete Lambeth Palace Library!
4. What has been your most memorable project?
There have been many over the years but I recently really enjoyed building a garden in Oxfordshire for Charlotte Rowe. A very good main contractor, lovely client and a very good design team. It’s an unusual scheme in that all the hard surfaces including the water feature were made out of concrete, all cast, laid and polished on site by our own teams.
5. What has been your most challenging project?
Again there have been many – from Euro Disney to Hampton Court Privy Garden, but logistically the most challenging was the roof garden we installed for Tom Stuart-Smith at Verde a couple of years ago. It involved multiple crane lifts, hampered by the weather and Police!
