Bowles & Wyer

This contemporary garden design reimagines a constrained urban site in Chelsea as a calm, multi-level outdoor retreat. Strong geometry is paired with naturalistic planting to create a clear architectural framework softened by layered greenery.

Reinstated twin staircases flank the rear extension, restoring symmetry and complementing the traditional materials of the surrounding properties. As an extension to the internal lounge space, an upper terrace provides a wide perspective over the whole rear garden.

Central steps from the lower ground dining space, framed by tiered beds, cascading planting and evergreen climber shape views from the kitchen and dining areas creating a strong connection with the garden and inviting you out. Structured topiary anchors the central axis, while low planting and groundcovers soften transitions. Around the retained mature tree, shallow-rooted species and taller boundary planting establish depth, enclosure and a rich, natural backdrop.
